A network of Community run libraries are available across the city. 

Community Libraries

For more information on the great things happening in these valuable community spaces pop in and see the volunteer teams on site. You can find some handy links below:

Facilities include: 

  • Toilets with disabled, accessible and baby change facilities
  • Two kitchens
  • Computers and printers
  • Café 
  • Garden

Hendon Library was built in 1908-09 with funds donated by Andrew Carnegie, a famous Scottish-American philanthropist.

Hendon branch was designed by Edward Cratney, of Wallsend and Sunderland.
In 2014, Back on the Map transformed the Library into a multi-use community facility and opened the largest ‘community operated library’ in the city, providing a whole host of social, educational, cultural, employment, training and welfare support services.

Kayll Road Library, was built in 1908-09 with funds donated by Andrew Carnegie, a famous Scottish-American philanthropist.

Kayll Road Library (West branch) was designed by Sunderland architect Hugh Taylor Decimus Hedley. The library was awarded Grade II listed status in 1990.
Kayll Road Library has thousands of books for you to choose from whatever your interests. You don't need a membership and can choose as many books as you like to keep for up to a month.

  • Books

Sharp advice centre offers a range of services alongside the library provision including:

  • Advice and guidance
  • Access to training
  • Employment support
  • Services for older people
  • Community development

This community library is operated by the Millennium Centre Trust.

The library has a wide range of books for both children and adults.

  • ICT Suite
  • Room Hire
  • Football Pitch
