A series of literature events are taking place across Sunderland over the coming months.

Delivered by Culture House Sunderland, the events give attendees the chance to hear directly from leading North East authors, as well as take part in workshops where budding writers can get advice from experts.

Author Eirinie Lapidaki will be discussing her debut novel, The Wives of Halcyon, which she began writing while working as a bookseller at Waterstones – going on to win a Northern Writers Award.

The session, which is part of New Writing North’s Northern Bookshelf Live programme, is taking place at the Creative Smart City Hub @ Houghton Library on Thursday 5 June, tickets are £3.

In July, best-selling author Glenda Young will be discussing her newly released book, Secrets of the Toffee Factory Girls, the second in a series inspired by Horner’s Toffee Factory and Dainty Dinah toffee of Chester-le-Street, set during World War I.

Glenda is the author of eight hugely popular family saga novels set in Ryhope in 1919 and a series of cosy crime novels set in modern-day Scarborough. She has written TV tie-in books for ITV’s Coronation Street and is also an award-winning short story writer.

Taking place at City Library on Saturday 26 July, tickets are £3.

Young people aged 14 – 18 can take part in a creative writing workshop during the summer holidays with author H. F. Askwith.

Participants will be guided through creative writing exercises, as well as hearing about H.F.’s own successful journey in writing and publishing, giving an insight into the world of writing as a profession.

Taking place at the City Library on Friday 8 August, tickets are from £3.

Cllr Beth Jones, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Tourism at Sunderland City Council, said: “It’s great to have these literature events taking place in the city, giving residents of all ages a variety of opportunities.

“Whether they’re budding writers keen to get tips on breaking into the industry or an avid reader looking to hear from a best-selling author, I’m sure the sessions will be hugely enjoyable and informative.”

The programme is being delivered by Culture House Sunderland a multi-purpose cultural venue that will sit at the heart of Riverside Sunderland and is set open later this year.

Culture House Sunderland aims to create a living room in the heart of the city where everyone feels welcome and loves to spend time. The venue will be home to the City Library, and will be packed with interactive, digital, educational features, with a year-round programme of things to do and see.
